The number of attorneys in the United States has sky-rocketed to over 1 million. And with more students than ever before attending law schools, the numbers continue to grow. Unfortunately, the number of cases out there has not grown nearly as much, making it more and more difficult to find good clients before they find your competitors. Many larger firms continue to throw tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars into double-truck ads or back covers of phone books. They do not realize that every single day more people are using the internet and less people are using phone books. These phone books will be replaced in a year and ultimately end up in a landfill.

There are three ways to market online for attorneys. The first way is by using an online directory. Directories are the most popular, but not the most effective way to be found online. Most people use search engines to find the directories, and when they get in to the directory, there are hundreds of attorneys to choose from. This is not much different than being listed in a phone book amongst all of your competitors.

The second way to be found online is by using paid placement, also referred to as pay-per-click links, sponsored links, or adwords. The placement is determined by how much the highest bidder pays. Anyone can out-bid you and take the top spot. There are several problems with this form of online marketing. First and most importantly, most people do not look at sponsored links or even know what they are. Many people assume they are advertisements that are not necessarily offering what they are looking for. Another reason why sponsored links can be a waste of money is because they are often clicked on by solicitors, researchers, students, or shoppers who do not have a case. Even worse, your competitors can go online and click on your link until your account is drained and you lose your placement all together.

The third and most effective way to market online is by working with an experienced Search Engine Optimization company with proven results. SEO puts your website on the front page of the search engines under the terms that your potential clients are typing in to find you. People assume that the most relevant websites to their search will be listed on the first page of the search engine they used in the natural or ‘free’ listings (the main part of the page). A lot of people think that the results of their search are listed in order of relevance and quality- which obviously is not true. You can be the worst attorney in town, and if you are using a good Search Engine Optimization Company, you will be getting the majority of the leads coming from those potential clients performing the search.
